What is vocational Education?

Vocational education prepares students for the workforce after high school. Students are trained in specific skills to be able to do a particular job such as welding. Vocational Education also offers apprenticeship programs that provide on-the-job training. Vocational education is distinct from general education as it focuses more on training individuals for specific jobs than on learning broad knowledge that can be used in the future. The goal of vocational education is not necessary to prepare people for university study but to help them find jobs upon graduation.

Vocational education can be offered at any level of schooling: primary, secondary, college, university, technical institutes and trade schools. There are also many specialty schools like nursing schools and law schools, legal schools, medical schools and dental schools as well as veterinary medicine, veterinary medicine, firefighting, police academies and military academies. Many of these schools offer both academic instruction and practical experiences.

In recent decades, many countries have made large investments in vocational training. The effectiveness of vocational education is still controversial. Some critics argue that it does little to improve students' employability; others argue that it provides useful preparation for life after school.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (47% of American adults are currently holding a postsecondary certificate/degree related to their current job), this figure is higher among those with more education. The median annual salary for people with a bachelor's was $50,000. This compares to $23,800 for those who don't have a degree. For those with advanced degrees, the median wage was $81,300.

For those who did no high school, the median salary was only $15,000. A person with a lower high school diploma earned $13,000 annually.
